It was an epiphany that unfolded quietly, the kind that sneaks up on you in the gentlest of ways, yet hits with the force of a revelation. The image—a stunning eye reflecting the vibrant flight of a hummingbird, a creature symbolic of life’s sweetness and the enjoyment of the present moment—carried a message that I had been sending to others without fully understanding its weight.
Have you ever seen your own beauty reflected in the eyes of those around you?
The inscription, “The beauty we see in another soul is a reflection of our own,” at first seemed like a simple compliment, an acknowledgment of the goodness in others. But it was so much more. For the longest time, I shared this image with others to deflect their praises directed at me. Their words felt undeserved because I couldn't allow myself to fully acknowledge what they saw in me.
When was the last time you recognized a part of yourself in someone else?
However, it wasn't until I allowed myself to absorb the depth of this message that I truly understood its power. Each time I recognized the warmth, kindness, or resilience in another, I was unknowingly shining a light on my own virtues. It was a mirror that I had been looking through but never into. This understanding didn’t come easily.
Societal standards and personal insecurities often cloud our ability to see our true selves. Have you ever felt invisible to yourself, obscured by the shadows of doubt?
I began to realize that every quality I admired in others was a piece of me. I had been so quick to downplay my own worth, brushing off every compliment with a dismissive, "I'm nothing special; it's just who I am." Yet, in a twist of profound irony, that was precisely what made it all so special—just being oneself.
This realization was transformative. It wasn't about ego or self-promoting but about acknowledging and cherishing the full spectrum of my being. I saw hope for humanity in the hearts of those I admired, and finally, I saw that same hope reflecting back from my own heart.
After realizing that I couldn't see my own beauty or acknowledge my contributions, and now allowing myself to recognize the gift of myself, I decided to reflect on everyone I absolutely admire and love. I thought about what made them so special and unique, and why I admire them so much. And then, I dared to do something unprecedented—I turned these reflections onto myself.
This self-reflection led to an "ugly cry" as I realized if it weren't for my desire to help an amazing lady see the contribution she is to the world, I would have never had this breakthrough. My desire to help her see and acknowledge the contribution she is helped me see mine. This cycle of giving and receiving insight became a profound moment of shared humanity.
To those who read this and see themselves in these words, understand that you are a mosaic of all the qualities you cherish in others. Your everyday actions, the love you give, the support you offer, and the smiles you share, are the threads that weave the tapestry of your existence. Your presence is a gift, not just to yourself, but to the world.
Here are some simple actions to start seeing the beauty within:
- Compliment someone genuinely and observe how it makes you feel.
- Write down three qualities you admire in someone else and then see those qualities in yourself.
- Share a moment of kindness with a stranger and notice the warmth it brings to your heart.
It’s time for us to accept the beauty of our being. To embrace the truth that we are not simply spectators of goodness and beauty but active participants and creators of it. Like the eye reflecting the hummingbird's grace, your life reflects the beauty of your soul in every act of kindness, every moment of connection, and every pursuit of what brings you joy.
You are not 'just' anything. You are everything that is admirable, lovable, and inspiring. In recognizing this, we not only see ourselves more clearly, but we also empower ourselves to continue being a source of positivity and strength for others.
So, let this be the moment you look into the mirror—not to critique or to compare, but to celebrate. See in yourself the qualities you admire in those you cherish. Recognize them, embrace them, and continue to share them with the world. For in doing so, you become not just a reflection of beauty but its very embodiment.
This journey of self-acknowledgment isn’t just about me; it’s a collective awakening.
By embracing our light, we illuminate the path for others, encouraging them to recognize and celebrate their own beauty and worth. It’s a ripple effect of self-realization, where allowing ourselves to acknowledge our own radiance naturally inspires others to discover theirs.
As we continue on this path of mutual recognition and celebration, I invite you to share your own journey of self-discovery and recognition. Reflect on the beauty you see in others and how it mirrors the beauty within yourself. How has acknowledging this beauty impacted your life? Share your stories, insights, and revelations with others, whether it be through conversations with friends, social media posts, or even personal journaling. By sharing, you not only reaffirm your own journey but also encourage others to embark on their own.
In closing, remember that the journey towards recognizing and celebrating our own beauty is continuous and ever-evolving. Each day offers new opportunities to see the beauty in ourselves and in the world around us. May you always find joy in the reflection you see in the mirror—not just the physical image, but the deep, intrinsic beauty of your soul.
Embrace your reflection, honour your presence, and celebrate the depths of your being.
May you always see the beauty within you, just as you see it in others, and may your journey be graced with joy and appreciation you so freely give.
Remember, you are the hummingbird in the reflection—radiant, vital, and inspiring.
Farewell, until we meet again in the mirror of our shared humanity.
With heartfelt sincerity,
Lissa Ripulone
